What Is Xarelto Used For?
Xarelto (the brand name for rivaroxaban) is prescribed by doctors to reduce the risk of stroke or blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat). It also is used as a treatment for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) and to help reduce the risk of these conditions from occurring again. Lastly, Xarelto is used to reduce the risk of forming a blood clot in the legs and lungs of people who have just had knee or hip replacement surgery.
Why Is Xarelto Dangerous?
While all blood-thinners (anticoagulants) carry an increased risk for serious bleeding events, recent studies suggest that Xarelto users are at a higher risk of such events than people who use Pradaxa or Coumadin, or warfarin. Xarelto, approved in July 2011 to treat DVT and PE in hip- and knee-replacement patients, is marketed as a new oral blood-thinner that is an alternative to warfarin. Xarelto was developed jointly by Bayer AG and Johnson & Johnson's Janssen Pharmaceuticals, which claims their drug does not require periodic monitoring with blood texts and does not limit a patient's diet.
What are the Side Effects?
The following are potentially fatal side effects linked to Xarelto: Serious bleeding events, including blood clots, brain hemorrhaging, hematoma, internal bleeding, pulmonary embolisms, rectal bleeding and thrombosis.
The following are some common symptoms of a serious bleeding event:
- Frequent nose bleeds
- Unusual bleeding from the gums
- Menstrual bleeding that is heavier than normal
- Red, pink or brown urine
- Coughing up blood or blood clots
- Feeling of dizziness or weakness
What to Do if You Experience Xarelto Side Effects
Contact a doctor immediately or go to an emergency room for treatment. The uncontrolled bleeding linked to Xarelto is an extremely serious medical condition. There is no available reversal agent in the event of bleeding complications. The original U.S. label approved when the drug was first marketed in the United States did not contain a warning regarding the lack of antidote.
